Taika Waititi has hit back at critics of ‘Klara and the Sun’, his adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel starring Jenna Ortega. On Halloween, Waititi posted a Screen Rant graphic about the film’s 78% Rotten Tomatoes audience score on his verified Instagram account, with a caption aimed at reviewers.

“I haven’t read a review of anything aimed at me or my peers in almost 15 years. But I do listen to the people,” Waititi wrote. “So this Halloween, let’s spare a thought for those sad lost souls who couldn’t achieve their dreams of becoming artists, and thus became critics. The same people who also hated Jojo Rabbit. Irrelevant. Out of touch. Obsolete. In the bin.”

As of Saturday afternoon, ‘Klara and the Sun’ holds a 26% Tomatometer score from 89 reviews, with a 75% Popcornmeter from audiences. That makes it the lowest-rated film Waititi has directed on the site, below ‘Next Goal Wins’ at 46%. The Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus says the film “aims to be endearing and inspiring but winds up cloying and twee.” Variety called it “twee, pulseless fantasy.”

The film co-stars Amy Adams and Mia Tharia, and Waititi co-wrote it with Dahvi Waller. Columbia Pictures released it in theaters on October 23.
